Police Science

The job of a peace officer is to protect people and property within a defined jurisdiction and enforce federal, state and local laws.

Since 1996, the 太阳城娱乐-Blue River Public Safety Institute's Police Academy program has provided certified training as set forth by the Missouri Department of Public Safety's Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) program, the governing agency responsible for the licensure and skills that are vital in the field.

Peace Officer curriculum

  • Our peace officer curriculum provides both lecture-based and hands-on instruction to give recruits valuable experience utilizing the decision-making skills that are vital in the field.
  • Peace Officer instruction includes communication skills, cultural sensitivity, de-escalation techniques, instruction and training in recognizing when and what type of intervention needs to occur, physical fitness and defensive tactics training, firearms training, advanced emergency driver training, and extensive scenario-based training.

Peace officers are the front-line of defense against criminal activity. Their roles break down into two parts:

  1. Public service, including crime prevention
  2. Enforcement of the law when a crime does occur

When crimes are committed, peace officers enforce laws and may:

  • Secure crime and accident scenes
  • Interview witnesses
  • Initiate life-saving CPR
  • Obtain warrants to search houses and businesses
  • Arrest and interview suspects
  • Write detailed arrest reports
  • Testify in court to help convict suspects
